Out of all the social media platforms, it appears that Twitter is the one that people know less about. So, today, I’ve made it my mission to share some facts and Twitter statistics that hopefully will make you see it in a different light.

Is Twitter right for you?
Before deciding to use any social media platform, you really need to think about whether it is right for you and for your business. With these statistics, it’s highly likely that Twitter will be. Have a think about the following: what’s your purpose for using social media, will the people you want to follow be there, and will your customers and potential customers hang out there?
Staying ahead
The main reason why people and businesses alike turn to Twitter is to seek the latest industry information. It really is a great source for ‘breaking news’.
It will come as no surprise then to hear that journalists use Twitter to find newsworthy articles and to keep up with real time events. So, if you’re looking to build a relationship with a journalist to get you in the press, Twitter is the place to be.
Fast and furious
Tweets have a very short lifespan and are incredibly snappy. This fast and furious behaviour ensures that the information shared is always precise and to the point.
Videos
It’s not static either, videos are on the rise and proving to be very effective. Twitter has seen a 62% increase in the posting of videos over the past 12 months.
Influencing your community
Think about the content of your Tweets. You can educate, inform, entertain, and sell. But remember too many salesy posts can put off your followers and you could end up being muted.
- Showcase what it is that you do or sell.
- Join in conversations.
- Follow people in your sector to learn about the latest news and trends.
- Follow your potential customer to learn about them and what they want.
- Educate your followers and highlight your expertise.
- Be yourself.
Personal and business accounts working together
Many high-profile company owners also have their own personal accounts allowing you to gain additional insight into sectors that interest you the most.
You’ll also see that many companies clearly encourage their employees to have their own accounts giving them more presence on the platform with these knowledgeable advocates. This is another great way that you can get on the radar of your potential customers – if you know the companies you’d love to work with, then striking conversation with their staff, especially those in decision-making positions, can work to your advantage.
It’s a safe environment
In the first half of 2020, Twitter suspended 925,700 accounts. They even dealt with the wrath of Trump!
It’s highly likely that the majority of these accounts deserved to be suspended but it wouldn’t surprise me if a very small number were suspended because the user simply didn’t know the rules.
And no, it’s not always serious
Twitter is often thought of as quite a serious and negative place. But this is far from the truth. When you follow and be followed by, the right people and businesses then it really is a positive place to be. A place where you can thrive and become part of a welcoming and supportive community.
As proof, the award for ‘Most Used Emoji Twitter 2020’ goes to the laughing emoji . This emoji was used over 2 billion times!
