Knowledge is power when it comes to social media. The more you understand how to use it, and what the algorithms are looking for, the better equipped you’ll be to grow an enviable social media account with loyal followers who love to interact with your posts.
Here are 4 of the most common social media mistakes that I see time and time again. Read on to find out what they are, along with some really useful social media tips, so you can elevate your social media presence and delight your followers time and time again.
Stop making these social media marketing mistakes:
1. Don’t be lazy when it comes to writing your social media profile.
Spending time perfecting the ultimate profile will be the difference between you putting customers off and attracting them. Your profile is one of the first things a potential customer will look at before deciding whether to follow you or not.
They’ll be wanting your profile to positively answer these questions:
- Does this brand have what I want and/or need?
- Will following this brand add value to me?
- Does the brand have a solution to my problem?
- Will this brand make my life easier or more pleasurable?
- Will following this brand make me feel good?
A social media profile that resonates will be a winning one that people want to follow!
2. Don’t leave a social media profile incomplete.
Empty social media profile sections don’t please the algorithms. And as you can see from the image above, it’s simply a waste of space! Take your time to create relevant content for each section and earn yourself some brownie points.
When you complete your profile in full, you’ll appear higher in the social media searches making it easier for people to find you.
If you’re on Twitter and/or Instagram, you’ll notice that there isn’t much space for a lot of detail, so make it count and don’t forget to add your website’s address here.
Facebook and LinkedIn offer more headings and more space for you to use. This is a wonderful place to showcase who you are and what you do in more detail.
When you address these common social media errors and complete all elements of your profile, you’ll have more success growing a quality audience.
3. Don’t post and run on social media!
This is just one of the social media tips for small businesses that improves your visibility fast!
While posting content is a crucial element of any social media strategy, it’s not the be-all and end-all. You must allocate time to engage with others, to be social!
When someone makes the effort to write a comment under one of your posts, acknowledge this with a response. And don’t forget to engage with other business pages, and in some well selected groups too, where your potential customers are likely to hang out.
I recommend that you spend 50% creating posts and 50% actively engaging. The more active you are, the more you’ll be rewarded with increased visability.
4. Don’t aim for high numbers of social media followers purely for vanity reasons.
Out of all the social media marketing mistakes, this one is the biggest! What you need to do is stop growing high numbers just because it may ‘look good’ and start attracting quality followers who follow you for the right reasons.
I’ve worked with a few organisations that have a desire to gain thousands of new followers and “Go Viral”. And when I ask them ‘why’, they never have a strategic response other than it makes them look popular.
My social media tips 2022 always include this one: Go for quality over quantity and NEVER buy followers! If you buy followers, you’re simply connecting with mobile phones that sit in a massive warehouse. They’ll NEVER engage with any of your posts, let alone buy from you. They’re not real.
To achieve successful organic growth, you need genuine followers who enjoy reading your posts, actively look out for them, and are happy to engage and interact with you and your wonderful community.
And if you’re ever tempted to do a like, tag and share competition to gain new followers, think again. You could end up with most of your followers only ever after something for free from you. That’s never going to be sustainable! You’re also likely to be banned off Facebook – here’s why.
